Understanding hemp-related oils

In a post on Mindbodygreen, Physician Assistant Jon Mitchell shares that there is a lot of confusion over the various oils extracted from cannabis or hemp plants. However, both cannabis and hemp “are the same species” according to Mitchell.

In fact, the only difference is, in order for a plant to be considered hemp, it must contain less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound typically associated with marijuana’s high effects.

With that in mind, there are two basic types of oil which come from a hemp plant:

  • Hemp oil, which is extracted from the stalk; and
  • Hemp seed oil, taken from hemp seeds for their fatty acids.

The other two types are CBD and cannabis oils says Mitchell. CBD is short for cannabidiol and this oil can be made from either cannabis or hemp plants, and uses the whole plant. Cannabis oil, on the other hand, is made specifically from the Cannabis sativa plant, a strain that it is more stimulatory than the Cannabis indica plant, which is known for producing calm instead says Mitchell.

All of the legalities aside, there are many physical conditions that hemp or CBD can potentially help treat. Many of these are acknowledged by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and include:

1. Chronic pain

More than one in four Americans (25.3 million) struggle with some level of daily pain according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). For approximately 23.4 million, this pain is quite intense.

Healthline shares that there has been a “great deal of promise” with CBD oil’s ability to aid in pain management via its anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects. Perhaps its most appealing aspect is that it doesn’t subject individuals to the negative side effects commonly associated with opioid-based prescription pain relievers, which are highly addictive in nature.

2. Inflammation

CBD and hemp oils have also been found beneficial to easing inflammation. They do this by downregulating cytokine and chemokine production while upregulating T-regulatory cells according to a 2010 study published in the journal Future Medicinal Chemistry, resulting in a suppression of the body’s inflammatory responses.

This makes these types of oils especially helpful for treating conditions characterized by inflammation, such as arthritis, which affects the joints. This is especially true in athletes as research has found that they tend to have higher rates of this particular pain and inflammation-based health condition.

3. Migraines

The Mayo Clinic shares that migraine headaches are commonly treated with a variety of different prescription medications. Some are designed to help patients better handle the pain associated with these intense and reoccurring headaches and others are meant to prevent their frequency or severity.

The problem with taking medications is that some have unwanted side effects. For instance, if taken regularly, aspirin and ibuprofen can cause ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding according to the Mayo Clinic. Opioid medications can be habit-forming. Another alternative is CBD oil.

Research conducted by the University of California, San Diego indicates that evidence in this area is somewhat lacking, but also adds that “there are sufficient anecdotal and preliminary results, as well as plausible neurobiological mechanisms” to make pursuing additional studies about CBD’s impact on migraines worth the time and effort.

Though CBD and hemp oils offer a lot of promise for a number of physical conditions, they have also been found to be beneficial for mental conditions too. Here are a few to consider.

1. Stress

According to the American Institute of Stress, three out of four Americans (77 percent) report that their stress is elevated to the point where it is creating physical symptoms. Additionally, the top three stressors in the U.S. are:

  • Job pressures (tension with co-workers or bosses, or work overload)
  • Money pressures (unemployment, reduced retirement benefits, high medical expenses)
  • Health pressures (a terminal or chronic issue, or some other type of health crisis)

Other common stressors include relationships, a poor diet, too much media, and not enough rest. This often results in them feeling irritable or angry (50 percent), nervous (45 percent), fatigued (45 percent), or ready to cry (35 percent).

Though stress is known to increase blood pressure and heart rate, some studies have found that CBD can help reduce these effects. This decreases the impact that stress has on the body overall.

2. Depression

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America indicates that, worldwide, approximately 322 million people suffer with depression. Oftentimes, these feelings of extreme and lasting sadness appear after experiencing the death of a loved one, suddenly finding oneself unemployed, or the ending of an important relationship.

Some studies have found that CBD can potentially help individuals overcome these types of feelings. It is suggested to work the same as it does for PTSD victims, by positively interacting with 5-HT1A neuroreceptors.

3. Anxiety

Research published in the journal Neurotherapeutics shares that current evidence “strongly supports” the potential of using CBD to help treat anxiety disorders. Its ability to decrease autonomic arousal and fear expression can help lower a person’s anxiety levels, while CBD also works to extinguish fears and prevent stress related to those fears from taking a toll on the body.

Some studies have even found that CBD can reduce anxiety in pediatric patients. For instance, one case study involved a 10-year-old girl who had been sexually abused and neglected by her parents. As a result, she suffered from anxiety and difficulty sleeping. However, after taking 25 mg of CBD supplements at night and 6 to 12 mg during the day via sublingual spray whenever she felt anxious, the girl reported decreased anxiety and improved sleep, with no negative side effects.
